On Thursday, November 7th, over 45 business leaders gathered at The Bull in Great Totham for a pivotal event organised by Maldon District Council in collaboration with the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The focus of the meeting was to discuss the implications of the recent Autumn Budget on local small businesses, a topic of great concern for many in attendance.
Budget Summary and Business Sentiment
Over a delicious, cooked breakfast, it was clear from conversations around the room that small business owners were feeling particularly vulnerable in the lead-up to the Budget announcement. Many expressed fears of being taxed beyond their capacity, with their life savings and homes often at stake. The atmosphere was one of cautious optimism, as attendees acknowledged that while the Budget posed challenges, it could have been far worse.
Challenges Ahead
Small businesses over the coming months may face significant challenges. Rising operational costs, inflation, and soaring energy bills are pressing concerns. Additionally, the increases in employer national insurance and the minimum wage, along with new employment law costs, are likely to strain the resources of businesses across Maldon and beyond.
The discussion highlighted the ongoing issues of labour costs, the availability of skilled workers, and the persistent problem of late payments, particularly in sectors like retail and hospitality. These factors contribute to a precarious environment where the question remains: will businesses be able to thrive, or will they merely survive?
Looking Forward
As the event concluded, the mood was one of resilience. Business leaders left with an understanding that while the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, there is also an opportunity for growth and adaptation. The support from organisations like the FSB, local councils, the North Essex Economic Board and business support programmes like Backing Essex Business will be crucial in navigating these turbulent times.
We want to extend a huge thank you to all of our guests and speakers, and hope to see you all at our next Maldon Business Breakfast.
