The Ansell & Sons Legacy
Ansell & Sons history is deeply rooted in the Raymond family’s long-standing presence in Maldon. Before Paul and his father Derek took over the butchers, there was Paul’s grandfather who began working a weekend job there in 1933, back when it was known as L.M. Ansell. Working alongside previous owner Leonard Ansell and his son Albert, Sidney soon took over the business following the passing of Albert.
A later discovery revealed an extraordinary twist in the family’s history: Sidney’s two-times-great-grandparents, William and Sarah Raymond, were the original founders of a butcher’s shop on the same site at 5 High Street back in 1796. Whilst they are unsure what William called the shop, the building was named “Crackbones” after John Crackbone, and it marked the beginning of a family tradition that spanned over 225 years.
Today, Ansell & Sons continues this legacy, with five generations of the Raymond family having served as butchers from the same location. Their commitment to quality, tradition, and serving the local community remains the foundation of the business.
